KEY POINTS

  • Created early visual Prototypes of the game to capture the team's vision.

  • Worked closely with another artist to create assets in the same visual style.

  • Designed the majority of UI elements and worked closely with programmer to implement the necessary functionality.

OVERVIEW

Created as part of a program-wide game jam hosted by Sheridan College, Buzzy Bar is a short 1v1 game about serving drinks built for an arcade cabinet. Use the joystick to create drink combos according to a set of instructions, and defeat your opponent in this bug themed bartending game.

DESIGN PROCESS

The primary challenge of this project was the time limit. Our game was meant to be played, from start to finish, in just 30 seconds. This set significant restraints on the complexity of the project, as the players needed to be able to understand and digest its mechanics as quickly as possible.

Above, you can see the development of different prototypes we made.

We also needed to incorporate the physicality of an arcade cabinet, including its resolution, height, and controls. having each player work on the same screen presented interesting challenges to us, since split screen was more awkward with the narrow size of the screen.

The 'type racing' format we settled on allowed players to use their joy stick as a directional input. It made the controls easy to grasp, and enabled us to get away with nearly no tutorial elements.

Above, See the short video showing how the game worked with our arcade cabinet.

See how it worked! Players took orders as they appeared in speech bubbles, and used each joystick to copy the pattern, assembling the drink.

We were very proud of our work, and it fit in well with the other games made during the jam.
